Preamble
Nottingham Forest v Malmö and historical connections. The these sides have a special connection, also meeting in Forest's most recent continental tour in the mid-90s European competition, but it is the premier competition final 46 years ago that links these clubs, with Britain's first £1m player the English forward heading the only goal of a pretty miserable final to clinch eternal glory for the the English club.
"Forest's famous bosses, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench quietly watching the mafficking," wrote the match reporter. Theirs has been an outstanding achievement that it is difficult to imagine happening again – from Second Division to continental competition in a short period."
It's also interesting to pause a little on Malmö, who became the initial and final Swedish club to make the championship match under manager Houghton.
Tonight's game is a very different to that pinnacle, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are absolutely buzzing after beating Liverpool 3-0 at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since last month following the end of the Swedish league season. The popular prediction is on the English side tonight.
Plenty of other action on offer in this clockwatch. The Glasgow club have already been defeated by a Braga this season. Rangers are last place of the 36-team Europa League standings at the midpoint of the group stage with exactly zero. They badly want a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a recovery for a knockout position.
Coverage will persist with all nine of the 8pm kick-offs and provide the most recent results from the earlier matches, including Villa vs Young Boys and Feyenoord v Celtic.
